This morning, several of our team members: Mark Denlinger, Samantha Gilland, Phil Smith, Jeff Combs, Mike Workman, and Carlee Kremer — had the opportunity to attend the South West Ohio ABC Contractors Conference. It was a packed day filled with learning, collaboration, and valuable conversations.
Breakout Sessions: Expanding Knowledge
During the first round of breakout sessions, our team split between two highly engaging presentations:
- Artificial Intelligence in Construction led by Rowan Street-Hall of Smartbuild
- Mental Health First Aid hosted by Lois Elrich of Real Change
Both sessions were filled with actionable insights. Other topics offered during this time included The 2025 Political Landscape and The Next Frontier of Construction Technology.
In the second round of breakout sessions, our team attended a presentation on Workers’ Compensation, while other available sessions included Empathy: The Leadership Skill That Changes Everything and Strategic Job Costing to Fuel Growth.
MSD on the Panel: Employer Branding & Value Proposition
One of the highlights of the day was seeing our very own Phil Smith take the stage as part of a panel titled:
Employer Branding – Value Proposition
with Phil Smith, Allison Mark, and Matthew Thomas
This dynamic conversation addressed one of the most pressing challenges in today’s labor market: how companies can attract and retain top talent in an environment where culture, reputation, and purpose matter just as much—if not more—than compensation. The panel explored the shifting expectations of the modern workforce and how organizations must adapt if they want to stand out in a competitive hiring landscape.
Phil and his fellow panelists emphasized the importance of crafting an authentic employer value proposition—one that goes beyond buzzwords and is truly reflected in day-to-day operations. They shared strategies for aligning organizational goals with employee needs, building trust through transparency, and fostering inclusive workplaces where individuals feel empowered to contribute and grow.
The discussion also touched on practical ways businesses can differentiate themselves, from leveraging storytelling in recruitment to investing in professional development and creating strong career pathways. Ultimately, the panel underscored that building a compelling employer brand is not just about attracting people to the door—it’s about creating an environment where they want to stay, thrive, and become champions of the culture.
Lunch with ABC National Leadership
After an inspiring morning, our team enjoyed a wonderful lunch with keynote speaker, Joe Xavier, Senior Director of Safety for ABC National.
Joe has served in leadership roles across health, safety, and compliance for more than a decade. Before joining ABC National in 2022, he was the CEO of Summit Sustainability Solutions. Today, he is passionate about partnering with chapters, members, and organizations to advance total human health, safety, and sustainability across the construction industry.
Final Takeaways
The conference was a powerful reminder of the importance of innovation, people-first leadership, and strong industry partnerships. From AI to workforce development, the sessions reinforced that the future of construction is about more than just building project. It’s about building workplaces where people grow, thrive, and feel valued.
A big thank you to ABC for hosting such a valuable event and creating space for contractors across the region to come together and learn.
