At MSD, Safety Always means exactly that—safety is a mindset we carry with us everywhere, not just on the jobsite. As the long days of summer fade into cooler mornings, earlier sunsets, and busy back-to-school routines, it’s the right time to slow down, refocus, and remember that staying safe takes awareness both at work and at home.
On the Road: Back-to-School Awareness
September brings a big shift in traffic patterns. School buses, morning drop-offs, and young students walking or biking to school are now part of the daily landscape. Whether you’re heading to a jobsite or just driving through town, keep these reminders in mind:
- Watch school zones – slow down, stay alert, and obey crossing guards.
- Bus safety – when the stop sign arm is out, don’t pass. Children may cross unexpectedly.
- Stay distraction-free – phones and coffee can wait. Eyes on the road keep everyone safe.
Remember: we represent MSD both on and off the clock. Driving safely shows professionalism and protects the communities where we live and work.
On the Jobsite: Seasonal Hazards
The transition to fall weather brings its own set of challenges for our field teams. “Safety Always” means anticipating those seasonal changes and adapting:
- Shorter days = lower visibility – ensure proper site lighting and wear high-visibility gear.
- Morning dew and wet leaves – surfaces can become slick, increasing slip and fall risks. Take extra caution when climbing ladders, scaffolding, or walking across metal surfaces.
- Temperature swings – mornings may be chilly, afternoons warm. Dress in layers and be mindful of fatigue when working in changing conditions.
- Tool & equipment checks – moisture from fog or early frost can affect equipment. Inspect before use, and never take shortcuts.
A few extra minutes spent checking conditions or gear can prevent hours, days, or even months of recovery from an injury.
At Home: Everyday Safety Matters
Safety doesn’t end when we leave work—it’s a habit that follows us everywhere. At home and in our communities, the same principles apply:
- Yardwork safety – as leaves fall and branches get trimmed, use ladders properly and wear protective gear.
- Fire prevention – cooler nights often mean fire pits or turning on heaters. Keep flammables clear and double-check smoke alarms.
- Sports & recreation – whether it’s Friday night football, hiking, or weekend projects, be mindful of hydration, stretching, and proper equipment.
Just like at work, the goal is to make it home safe every single day.
Safety is a Choice, Every Day
The seasons may change, but our commitment does not: Safety Always means staying alert, making smart decisions, and looking out for one another. Whether it’s checking a harness on the jobsite, slowing down in a school zone, or raking leaves at home, safety isn’t just policy—it’s culture.
This fall, let’s continue to practice Safety Always—in every season, on every site, and in every part of our lives.
