What Is a Coil Line in Ductwork Fabrication

What Is a Coil Line in Sheet Metal Fabrication

In modern ductwork fabrication, efficiency and precision are everything. One of the most important pieces of equipment that makes this possible is the coil line

A coil line is a machine that takes raw sheet metal in coil form and automatically processes it into ductwork components. Instead of manually cutting and forming metal sheets, the coil line handles this process with speed and consistency.

How a Coil Line Works

A coil line feeds large rolls of sheet metal through a series of automated processes, including:

  • Straightening the metal
  • Cutting it to exact dimensions
  • Forming it into duct sections
  • Preparing it for assembly

This allows fabrication shops to produce ductwork faster and with greater accuracy.

Why Coil Lines Matter in Ductwork Fabrication

The use of a coil line directly impacts the quality and speed of a project.

1. Increased Production Speed

Coil lines allow for continuous production, which means faster turnaround times for projects.

2. Consistent Accuracy

Automated processes reduce human error and ensure every piece meets exact specifications.

3. Ability to Handle Large Projects

Coil lines can produce ductwork in a wide range of sizes, making them ideal for large commercial jobs.

4. Improved Efficiency

Less manual handling means lower labor time and more efficient workflows.

MSD Inc Coil Line Capabilities

At MSD Inc., our state-of-the-art coil line installed in 2025 allows us to fabricate ductwork with unmatched flexibility and precision.

We can produce:

  • Duct sizes from 6 inch by 6 inch up to 144 inch by 144 inch
  • Materials ranging from 24 gauge to 16 gauge
  • Options including galvanized and paint grip steel

This capability allows us to support everything from small custom jobs to large-scale commercial projects.

Why It Matters for Your Project

Choosing a fabrication partner with advanced equipment like a coil line means:

  • Faster production timelines
  • More accurate ductwork
  • Reduced field modifications
  • Smoother installations

In short, it helps keep your project on schedule and on budget.

WPAFB Sensors Lab

Wright-Patt Air Force Base sought contractors to renovate and add onto the Sensors Lab. The HVAC portion of the project was over $13 million.

  • MSD served as the Design Assist Contractor in conjunction with Heapy Engineering for this project. In collaborating with General Contractor, Butt Construction, MSD provided Design Assist solutions for the following:
    • A large, anechoic chamber
    • An outdoor range
    • Multiple, Class-100 clean rooms
    • A three-story office building addition with DCID 6-9 requirements on many of the rooms

WPAFB Chilled Water System

The chilled water system at a high-security building on the Air Force Base was undersized and unable to keep up with demand. The facility could not operate without chilled water due to the amount of information servers in the building, and the general nature of the building itself. The entire upgrade project would need to be completed with minimal shut down time at the building. HVAC portion of this project was over $3 million.

  • MSD worked in collaboration with Diaz Construction to complete the system upgrades on time and on budget with minimal shutdowns or disruption to the facility operations.

LJB, Inc.

LJB, Inc. was renovating their Miamisburg, OH office and wanted to incorporate energy-saving upgrades.

  • MSD provided Design Build services in tandem with Greensleeves Energy Solutions, a specialist in geothermal systems.
  • MSD and Greensleeves installed a new geothermal HVAC system with open and closed loops. In addition, MSD design and installed the plumbing portion of the renovation.
